Leading the Week 

All signs now point to the ceasefire and hostage/prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel moving ahead on Sunday (January 19). The first hours and days of the agreement will dominate international news next week, with the release of more hostages and the return of internally displaced Gazans due to begin amid what is likely to be a fragile ceasefire. 


Monday (January 20): Donald Trump is sworn in for second term as President; UN Security Council holds ministerial-level meeting on the Middle East. 

Tuesday (January 21): Ursula von der Leyen, Olaf Scholz, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Isaac Herzog among speakers at Davos; Confirmation hearing for Elise Stefanik, Donald Trump’s nominee to be Ambassador to the UN. 

Wednesday (January 22): UN Gaza aid chief Sigrid Kaag, Muhammad Yunus, and Mohammed Mustafa among speakers at Davos; Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Thailand. 

Thursday (January 23): Oscars nominations announced; Mark Rutte and Javier Milei among speakers at Davos. 

Friday (January 24): IMF and ECB heads discuss global economic outlook at Davos; Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis address March for Life rally in Washington, DC. 

Saturday (January 25): Australian Open women’s final. 

Sunday (January 26): Presidential election in Belarus; NFL Playoffs Conference Championship Games; Australian Open men’s final.
