Leading the week
While next week currently looks to be dominated by the courts and Jerome Powell’s Jackson Hole speech, the news agenda is likely to be overtaken by the fallout from Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska today. Trump told reporters yesterday that he wanted to see Putin sit down with Volodymyr Zelenskyy ‘almost immediately’ if things go to plan, so we could see anything from a flurry of calls with allies to preparations for peace talks to panic if Putin manages to sway Trump on terms that are unacceptable to Ukraine and European leaders. All eyes on tonight’s press statements and readouts for indications of where next week might take us.
